Urban Forest School

Duncombe Primary aim to improve children’s well-being by enabling them to spend time outdoors in nature and learn about the environment.

At Duncombe Primary, we aim to improve our children’s well-being by enabling them to spend time outdoors in nature and learn about our environment.

Thanks to The Morris Charitable Trust, we will be able to continue working with local award winning charity The Garden Classroom, being immersed in nature through their Urban Forest School programme. We have already noticed that our pupils this year are more confident, resilient, independent and, crucially in a borough like Islington, able to experience nature.

This opportunity to connect with the natural world is particularly important for our children, many of whom live in flats with no garden. This combined with the fact Islington has the second lowest amount of greenspace in England and Wales as well as the 10th highest deprivation level means these sessions are bringing the benefits of Forest School to children who otherwise would have no connection with nature.

“The children this year have gained so much from Forest School, we are over the moon that we will be able to continue with the next Reception cohort due to this funding. it set’s the kids up for a lifelong love story with nature, as well as teaching so many valuable life skills.”
